The VASBO Cardinal Award has been established to recognize an Outstanding School Business Official who exemplifies professionalism, leadership and innovation in the field of school business management.  Only members of the Virginia Association of School Business Officials (VASBO) are eligible for the award.  Current VASBO Cardinal Award Committee members are not eligible.

      The VASBO Cardinal Award will be given out at the VASBO Annual Spring Conference that takes place annually in May or June.   The winner will receive a plaque commemorating the award and VASBO will pay for him or her to attend the Annual Conference of the Southeastern Association of School Business Officials (SASBO) the following spring (usually held in April).

      The recipient of the VASBO Cardinal Award will be recognized the following spring at the Annual Conference of the Southeastern Association of School Business Officials (SASBO).

      A VASBO Cardinal Award Oversight Committee has been established from members of the VASBO Management Team.  The VASBO Oversight Committee will be responsible for handling all paperwork functions related to the VASBO Cardinal Award.

      A VASBO Cardinal Award Selection Committee will be established to consist of five (5) members.  Those members each year will be the current VASBO President, President (Elect), Treasurer, Secretary, and immediate past VASBO Cardinal Award winner.  For the first year, the immediate past VASBO President will serve as a committee member since no immediate past VASBO Cardinal Award winner will exist. 

      An Active Member of VASBO may submit nominations for the VASBO Cardinal Award by submitting a “Nomination Form” to the VASBO Cardinal Award Oversight Committee by January 31^st.

      Once all nominations have been received, the VASBO Cardinal Award Oversight Committee will send a notification letter and “Application Form” to all nominees by February 15^th.

      Nominees must return the “Application Form” and one (1) letter of recommendation to the VASBO Cardinal Award Oversight Committee by March 31^st.  

      The VASBO Cardinal Award Oversight Committee will forward all applications/recommendations to the VASBO Cardinal Award Selection Committee.  The VASBO Cardinal Award Selection Committee will review all applications/recommendations and each committee member will evaluate each nominee using the “Evaluation Form”.  The nominee with the highest combined score will be awarded the VASBO Cardinal Award.  In the event of a tie, the final decision will be made based on a vote between the VASBO Cardinal Award Selection Committee members.

      The VASBO Cardinal Award Oversight Committee will be responsible for notifying the superintendent and family of the successful candidate and will invite them to attend the VASBO Spring Conference for the presentation of the award.

      The VASBO Cardinal Award Oversight Committee will be responsible for notifying SASBO of the winner to be recognized at their Annual Conference the following year.

      Each year’s VASBO Cardinal Award winner will be asked to serve on the VASBO Cardinal Award Selection Committee for the following year.  This will be a one-year term and will end once the new VASBO Cardinal Award winner is announced.

      The names of nominees submitted and the selection of the successful candidate will be kept in strict confidence.
