VASBO President's Message

Hello Friends and Colleagues,

I am humbled to accept the office of President for VASBO for the 2016-2017 Fiscal Year.

I have been a member of VASBO since 1993 – almost ½ of my life.    Where would I have been without this organization?  Would I have been successful in my career?  Would I have remained in education?  I think the answers to both would have been a resounding no.  I have valued the professional development and continuing education classes that VASBO has provided me throughout the years.  VASBO has continued to prove that “YOU CAN TEACH OLD DOGS NEW TRICKS” or at least how to remain in compliance with new laws and legislation.

I will ask you to be an active member in VASBO in the coming year.  I will ask you to serve on committees, to answer surveys, to voice your opinion, to make suggestions and to come to conferences and to continuing education sessions.  Your active participation is crucial to the future success of the organization.  I know that if we work together, we can accomplish great things.

If we extend our influence and reach out to professional organizations like VASS and VASPA, we can work together to improve the delivery of education in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Our collective wisdom, knowledge and experience is a priceless commodity that we must capitalize upon to positively impact education legislation especially in the changing dynamics of the education landscape.  Charter schools, Virtual Schools, Private School Vouchers all threaten to alter the status quo and we need to be in a position to offer sound financial advice to our elected officials so that the needs of all students are met across vast socio economic demographics.

I ask you to join with me as we continue the good work of those who have come before and to lay the groundwork for those to follow so that VASBO will be recognized as the foremost authority on school business issues in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Shannon Irvin
